The most beautiful word I know

If you do a pub crawl around a Welsh town soon (and it should be on your bucket list), you’ll inevitably arrive at a pub and see directions to ‘The Cwtch’ — which is pronounced to rhyme with butch.

While you may be confused at first, be assured that you are not being directed towards the toilets or the beer garden but to a cosy area where you can cuddle up with your loved ones and drink your pint in relative peace.

For cwtch is a word that to everyone who knows it means warmth and cuddles. It’s that place in the pub where you can sit down on a comfortable armchair in front of a roaring fire and have a Labrador lie down at your feet while gazing up at you longingly. It’s a long hug from your best friend after losing your job or falling flat on your face in the local supermarket. It’s a cuddle from your mum followed by your favourite meal after your football team just lost the cup final. In short, it’s the best thing that can ever happen to you.

So, the next time a Welsh person asks you if you want a cwtch, go towards them and bask in the love. It’s unique.
